Social workers have no business being involved in police calls. Our department has a professionally trained advocate that goes out on mental health issues calls with our officers. They make recommendations and our officers follow those recommendations. But our officers are also trained in this area both in-house and off-site. I guess our department along with many others are doing it right. Happy purride cat. If someone calls the police because of an unarmed person with mental illness, a social worker is *much* better equipped to deal with that person than a cop. So many times the cop winds up killing someone who just needs help. Police should be called when crimes are being committed. Trained service professionals should be called for other needs. Don’t use a hammer when a screwdriver is required. If it is a welfare check, mental distress, why not? As a mental health care worker when I saw someone acting out with a knife, a club or ad the last person that I dealt with garden shears I never once needed to kill them. I call BS on your statement.

When I’ve had a violent client I contact law enforcement. Happy purride cat. They’ve never killed any of my clients. Working with law enforcement isn’t an “all or nothing, black or white” situation.
